Alvin Louis Rosentreter, 87, a lifelong Vergas area resident, passed away under hospice care on Friday, February 12, 2010 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN.
Alvin Louis Rosentreter, 87, a lifelong Vergas area resident, passed away under hospice care on Friday, February 12, 2010 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN.
Alvin was born June 12, 1922, to Emil and Erna (Zitzow) Rosentreter in Dora Township, Otter Tail County, MN. He grew up and attended school in Dora Township through the eighth grade. Following his schooling, Alvin remained in Dora Township where he worked on the family farm. On June 15, 1944, Alvin was united in marriage to Ruth Glawe at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. After they were married, the young couple made their home on a farm in Candor Township where they remained until Alvin’s passing. Alvin truly enjoyed farming and earned the East Otter Tail County Farmer/Homemaker award on February 16, 1992. When Alvin was not busy on the farm, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing with his wife, Ruth. During his retirement years, Alvin kept busy trapping gophers in the area. Alvin was an active member of the Candor Township board where he served for 21 years. He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Vergas where he served as an elder and trustee for six years and also enjoyed singing with the church choir for 30 years. He also served on the Vergas elevator board for six years.
Alvin is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth; five children, Judy (Victor) Johnson of New England, ND, Rodney (Kathie) of Vergas, Randy of Vergas, Gary (Ailene) of Lake Park, MN and Wayne of Vergas; four grandchildren, Bethany (Ryan) Shern of West Fargo, ND, Kyle Johnson of Jamestown, ND, Erika Johnson of West Fargo, and April Rosentreter of Minneapolis, MN; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ben (Lois) of Lindstrom, MN and Melvin (Donna) of Vergas; three sisters, Gertrude Glawe of Detroit Lakes, Betty Glawe of Vergas and Dorothy Rehbein of Dent; and one sister-in-law, Jane Rosentreter of Fergas Falls, MN.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; and four siblings, Viola, in infancy, Harry, Adeline McKenzie and Violet Hoffman.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 17, at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Vergas with Rev. Robert Hinckley officiating. Casketbearers were Mark Glawe, Larry Rosentreter, Darrell McKenzie, Perry Rosentreter, Virgil Hoffman, David Glawe, Arlen Rehbein, Leon Glawe, Lonnie Rohloff, Tammy Schultz, Doug Rosentreter, Glen Rosentreter, Laurel McKenzie, Allen Rehbein and Dennis McKenzie. Matthew McKenzie and Michelle Johnson sang “For it is Well with My Soul.” Donna Hanson was the organist. Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “Beautiful Savior,” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” Interment was in the St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Furey Funeral Home, Frazee, MN.
