Frances was born August 17, 1913 in Hurdsfield, N.D., to Frank and Genevieve (Mortimore) Cullen. She was the third of 11 children. At the age of four, Frances moved with her family to the Baker/Barnesville, Minn. area. She attended and graduated from high school in Breckenridge, Minn.
After graduating from high school, Frances moved to California. After returning to Minnesota, she married Jake Honer on July 2, 1935. Looking for work, they moved to California where their eldest child was born. After a couple of years in California, they moved back to Dent and bought the Louis Honer farm and remained there farming until Jake’s death in August 1962. All the while Frances was very active with the farm and raising her children.
In 1965, Frances married Ray Nelson and they opened a restaurant in Dent. In 1974, Frances and Ray joined the “snowbird” generation and moved to California to live there during the winter months and return to Dent in the summer. Ray died in 1976. Frances remained in California until 1989 at which time she moved back to Minnesota and has lived in her rural home near Dent since.
Frances was active with Christian Mothers; she was a charter member and the first appointed Christian Mothers president. She was also involved in the Mission Circle and other activities with Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dent. She had many hobbies such as crocheting, quilting, ceramics, watching/identifying birds and reading, but her great love over the many years was creating and tending her beautiful flowerbeds.
On August 21, 2010, Frances passed away peacefully in Timbergrove at the Perham Memorial Home in Perham, at age 97. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
