Clarence Jacob Schriver, 93, a 12-year resident of the Minnesota Veteran’s Home and formerly of Vergas, died Friday, August 27, 2010, at the Home in Fergus Falls. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, September 3, at the Minnesota Veteran’s Home Chapel, Fergus Falls, with services to follow at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Vergas Village Cemetery. Clarence Jacob Schriver, 93, a 12-year resident of the Minnesota Veteran’s Home and formerly of Vergas, died Friday, August 27, 2010, at the Home in Fergus Falls.
He was born on September 28, 1916, in Waubun, the son of Michael and Margaret (Jaeger) Schriver. The family moved to rural Perham where he attended country school. He then work on the family farm near Vergas.
On October 21, 1941 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and trained at Camp Wallis and New Orleans before serving in the Panama Canal as a gunner with the Anti Aircraft Battery. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he served four years. Returning to the United States, the ship was engulfed in enemy fire on the Caribbean Sea. The company survived. Clarence served his country at Ft. Sheridan, Ill. and Camp Croft, S.C. training infantry recruits for overseas duty. He was stationed in the New York City Recruitment Center and sent overseas to Tokyo, Japan during the Korean War. He was promoted to Master Sergeant and served in Japan and on the border of Korea , returning to Cheyenne, Wyo., as an artillery advisor to the National Guard. He was discharged from in September of 1963.
He returned to the Vergas area where he purchased a home and worked 12 years with area farmers including Rodney Richter. His father, Mike, resided with him. In 1998, Clarence entered the Minnesota Veteran’s Homes new facility. Clarence was active in their Residence Council, playing cards and bingo. He was a life member of the V.F.W., Frazee and the American Legion, Perham.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Walter; six sisters, Ludwina as an infant, Rosie Mindermann, Marie Gerber, Goldie Albright, Ruth Tester and Edwina Hanneman.
Survivors include two sisters, Erma Carlson of rural Battle Lake and Bertha Sonnenberg of
Vergas; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, September 3, at the Minnesota Veteran’s Home Chapel, Fergus Falls, with services to follow at 1 p.m. Reverend Greg Hyak is the officiant.
